Remove an image background (logos)
Make the background of a logo or graphic transparent so it sits on top of your video.
- Right-click the image in the Project panel or on the timeline and choose Remove Background… (or select the clip and click Remove Background… in Effect Controls).
- The background colour is detected from the image border. The preview shows the result on a checkerboard (transparent areas).
- Adjust if needed:
- Click the preview on the background to pick its colour; Shift+click to add more colours (for gradients or two-tone backgrounds).
- Remove: Background touching the edges keeps white parts inside the logo; This colour everywhere also clears holes inside letters such as O, A and e.
- Tolerance: raise it when bits of background remain; lower it if parts of the logo disappear.
- Edge softness: smooth, anti-aliased edges with no coloured fringe.
- Trim transparent edges: crop the empty border around the logo.
- Click Remove Background.
A new transparent PNG is created and added to the Project panel; the clip switches to it. The original file is not changed and stays in the Project panel. Press ⌘Z to go back.
This works by colour, not AI, so it is best for logos and graphics on a plain background. For a person or object in a photo, use a mask instead. Images that already have transparency (PNG, WebP) keep it.
Shortcuts show the Mac keys: on Windows and Linux use Ctrl for ⌘ and Alt for ⌥.
