Timeline basics
Tracks
Video tracks (V1, V2 …) are stacked: higher tracks appear on top in the picture. Audio tracks (A1, A2 …) are mixed together. Add tracks with + Video / + Audio in the timeline toolbar. See Tracks: lock, hide, mute, solo.
The playhead
The red line shows the current time. Click or drag in the ruler to move it. The timecode on the left of the ruler shows its position.
Adding clips
- Drag from the Project panel or Source monitor onto a track. Hold
⌘while dropping to insert (push later clips right) instead of overwrite. - A video with sound becomes a linked pair: picture on a video track and sound on the matching audio track.
Overwrite behaviour
When a clip is moved or dropped on top of others, it replaces whatever is under it — clips underneath are trimmed or split, exactly like a professional editor.
Zoom and scroll
See Zooming and the zoom scroll bar.
Shortcuts show the Mac keys: on Windows and Linux use Ctrl for ⌘ and Alt for ⌥.
