Tracking a mask

Tracking makes a mask follow something that moves, such as a face to blur or a product to highlight.

  1. Put the playhead at the first frame where the subject is visible.
  2. Draw a mask around the subject (see Masks). Keep it reasonably snug.
  3. Click Track ▶ on the mask. A progress window shows the frames being analysed; click Stop to end early.

The mask now moves with the subject from that point to the end of the clip. Clear track removes the movement. Tracking works on video clips and follows position (not rotation or scale). It works best on subjects with clear detail and steady lighting.

Shortcuts show the Mac keys: on Windows and Linux use Ctrl for ⌘ and Alt for ⌥.
