The Tools strip

The vertical Tools strip is on the left of the timeline. Hover a tool to see its name and shortcut.

  • Selection V — select, move and trim.
  • Track Select Forward A — click to select a clip and everything after it on all tracks (Shift-click: only that track). Then drag to move them all.
  • Track Select Backward ⇧A — the same, for everything before.
  • Ripple Edit B — drag a clip edge; later clips move to keep no gap.
  • Rolling Edit N — drag the cut between two clips; one gets longer, the other shorter, total length unchanged.
  • Rate Stretch R — drag an edge to change the clip's speed so the same footage fills the new length.
  • Razor C — click to cut a clip.
  • Slip Y — drag a clip to change which part of the source plays, without moving it.
  • Slide U — drag a clip between its neighbours; they are trimmed so no gap opens.
  • Hand H — drag to scroll the timeline.
  • Zoom Z — click to zoom in, Alt-click to zoom out.
  • Type T — click in the Program monitor to write a title. See Titles.
  • Rectangle / Ellipse — drag in the Program monitor to draw a shape. See Shapes and color mattes.
  • Pen P — click points on a clip in the Program monitor to draw a mask. See Masks.

Shortcuts show the Mac keys: on Windows and Linux use Ctrl for ⌘ and Alt for ⌥.
