Snapping
With snapping on (S, magnet icon), edges snap to the playhead, other clip edges, markers and In/Out points.
Dropping clips from the Project panel: a clip dropped on top of, or just to the right of, the clip on its left goes straight to that clip's end, so clips line up with no gap and nothing is overwritten. Drop it further right to leave a gap. Turn snapping off (S) to drop at the exact pointer position, overwriting what is there. Hold ⌘ while dropping to insert and push later clips right.
Shortcuts show the Mac keys: on Windows and Linux use Ctrl for ⌘ and Alt for ⌥.
