Transitions
Add a transition
- Drag it from Effects ▸ Video Transitions onto the left half of a clip (its start) or the right half (its end). When two clips touch, dropping at the cut makes a transition between them.
- Or select a clip and press Apply (both ends), or press
⌘Dto add a Cross Dissolve at the edit nearest the playhead (or both ends of the selected clips).
The transition plays a short preview automatically. Press Space to watch again.
Edit a transition
Transitions appear as striped boxes on clips. Click one to select it; Effect Controls shows its Type and Duration. Right-click it to change the type, set the duration or clear it. Press Delete to remove a selected transition.
Between two clips
A transition on a cut is centred on the cut: the first clip continues past its end and the second starts before its beginning. When the source has extra footage there ("handles"), real frames are used; otherwise a frame is held.
Single-sided
On a clip with nothing next to it, the transition goes from/to transparent — so Push slides a title in from the side, and Cross Dissolve fades it.
Shortcuts show the Mac keys: on Windows and Linux use Ctrl for ⌘ and Alt for ⌥.
